Conventional laparoscopy

Conventional laparoscopy

This well-established technique revolutionised surgery when it was first introduced. It has resulted in a significant reduction in risks and enhanced recovery in patients in all forms of major surgery.

In Gynaecology, it involves making small cuts in the tummy and inflating it with gas. A telescope is then inserted and the internal organs are visualised. Multiple other instruments are inserted through other small incisions and major surgery undertaken including

  • Hysterectomy
  • Removal of ovarian cysts
  • Removal of fibroids
  • Resection endometriosis
  • Repair of prolapse and incontinence
  • Tubal reversal following sterilisation
  • Laparoscopy avoids the need for traditional surgery where there is a large cut used. The benefits include:

  • Lower risks of surgery from bleeding and infection
  • Less scarring internally
  • Possibility of same day surgery
  • Shorter convalscence
  • Earlier return to work
  • In my practice, I have also introduced the Single Incision technique. Even complex major surgery like hysterectomy can be performed using this technique with a better cosmetic result.
